10 things NOT to say in your Author Comments

Posted by bcdefg123 - August 8th, 2010

I've noticed some trends among what gets passed and blammed, so I've compiled a list of ten things NOT to say (or at least use with caution) when you submit Flash to the portal. There are a few simple ways to avoid looking like you don't really know what you're doing here. I know this from some of the rejects, and from judging quite a few Flashes in my time.

1. It's only my first game.
- Yes, this is a legitimate thing to say unless all you have is a picture of some guy flying around against an all-white background.
2. ...so I submitted this again.
- Legitimate if you had updated your Flash enough for an immediately noticeable difference. If it was blammed the first time, don't resubmit. If you do it immediately, the same people will be judging, and the only thing they'll be happy for is the easy blam point.
3. Vote 5!
- Also legitimate, but if you have something you KNOW is bad, nothing can save you from being Blammed.
4. I'm not done with it yet
- Legitimate if you want to solicit feedback and/or want to show something off that is MOSTLY DONE and just needs polish mainly.
5. Don't blam this.
- Now we enter the realm of don't use in any circumstances. Most flashes with this simple sentence will, in fact, be blammed. Why? This shows you yourself don't have any confidence in what you made. If you don't, why should we?
6. Don't blame this.
- Same as above, except you also commit the fatal error of proving you don't know basic Newgrounds terminology. Ouch.
7. Something in Spanish or some other language (when we all know you had to read English to get this far into the site)
- As far as I know, Newgrounds is only an English site. Having an author comment in ONLY another language (English and then a translation is perfectly fine) is just a turnoff for many normal users. Plus, didn't you need to read English to submit to Newgrounds in the first place?
8. This flash attempts to shed light on the inner workings of society, while examining what we as mere cogs in the machine can do about it, culminating in a poignant documentary that explores the fragile pieces of our world.
- A flash with this type of description is virtually 99.9% guaranteed to be awful, bearing no relation to the description.
9. Please don't blam it again.
- Well, we blammed it once, what's to stop us from doing it again? Usually, using this implies you made no attempt to improve.
10. lololol
- Implies you are age 13 or under.

Wow, looks like a pretty good list you have here. As far as what the author can control, that list does outline some things that could aggravate people to blam a submission. Though, like many other things, exceptions occur. After all, I find members and visitors of Newgrounds can sometimes be spontaneous and unpredictable.

Very true- nothing here guarantees a blam, but they're usually not good things to include...
